Easiest job in the world
I would know, because it's my job.
I oversee the computer lab on the 5th floor of the Law School Library at the University of Texas. I only work nights when no one is here.
This is how I work for the 3 or 4 hours I am there:
I get paid $7.32 an hour. The pay is relatively low, but consider what I do:
--1.) If someone asks for help, I help them.
--2.) If someone prints something, I place their printout on a table 4 feet away from the printer.
Of course at night no one is here to ask questions and no one is here to print. Therefore I get paid to do homework, business or anything else (Where do you think I created NevBlog from??)
This is a perfect student job because you can get so much work done during work.
Not only do I do nothing, I also get:
- A really cool boss (But he leaves at 5:00pm, so I never see him).
- Free printing
- Free use of computers, scanners, DVD burners etc.
- Fridge
- Wireless internet
- Average of $260 paycheck every 2 weeks.
Walk through the library with me through this video:
Warning: I always have plenty of "stuff" to do, so working night hours is perfect for me. Other co-workers however have found night hours to be "Mindnumbingly boring" and "Excruciatingly quiet"

now just let me find a bag just in case the headache do some funny tricks..
what are your hours? you're right, its dreadfully empty.
but I gotta agreed with you too, jobs like that are pretty nice if they fit your schedule. Nothing beats getting paid to take care of your own things.
Anyway, love the video, but try to keep it steady next time.
It got me thinking. You are so productive and don't waste time. However, most of us waste money on things we know are costing us. For example, I go to Starbucks several times a week. It's a small expense and I can afford it, but it costs me over $400 per year. Do you have any wasteful expenses like that? Maybe you could do a post on this.
But then we got the idea to start selling their (students') time to other departments in the university, so now the students working at the desk are always busy with something (technical/computer work).
Every time we present a review of what we did at educational conferences, we get tons of questions from schools wanting to do the same thing. Then again, you are working for a law school library, so I'm sure they have plenty of money to throw around & aren't too worried about recouping any of their expenses.

Take the plumber for example. Most people don't want to deal with leaking toilets, so they charge around $100 an hour in my area. (more than what I do).
It is a corrorary of the Offer and Demand law.
What you must do is find a job that most people don't want to do, but you don't mind doing.
You have found such a job. You do not mind late hours. Your job pays a lot of money compared to the ammount work you say you do.
I also found such a job. It pays me relatively well. My current employer can send me anywhere in the world with as little as a 4 hour notice (just enough to pick up my bags at home and run to the airport). The kind of work I will do when I arrive is varied, and I probably didn't had enough time to prepare, but ussually is along the lines of: present the product, customize it, fix it. Anyone with half a brain and some computer software skills and experience can do the job. But the hours and flexibility scares most people away.
I do not mind however. And I enjoy meeting people from other cultures. Found something "no one else want to do". :)
Keep your way of thinking.
Money and Investing
Hey Nev,
I had the exact same job in a computer lab in college about 8 years ago. I kind of looked at it like you did and took the money. It wasn't a lot, but gave me a little extra cash each month. Now here's the crazy thing:
Because of THAT JOB, I'm making near 6 figures now (including benefits). I got a degree in political science (what the hell do you do with a poli sci degree anyway?), but because I had worked in the computer lab, I got hired at a dot.com, got lots of stock options, and got TONS of experience, which I now use at a fortune 500 company.
Just something to keep in mind.
