Interviewing 101: How to impress employers

I think you hit the point when you mention character and personality. I’ve interviewed a number of college seniors and juniors looking for internship for the company that I work for. The main deciding factor between equally skilled candidate is “do I want to spend hours on end every single day with this person?” Would I want to have a drink with this person at happy hour?
Because in the end, much of what you learn, you will learn on the job. Character/personality are two things that really cannot be taught.
Also the other thing you should mention is that the interview process does not start at the scheduled interview time. It starts from your first meeting [ie career fair, emails, phone calls] all the way until you are given an offer.
Career fairs are usually the first time you give the recruiters your first impression. Make sure you use your time wisely. And please don’t give canned questions or responses. We’re there for the entire day and we’ve heard all the same questons. Ask us something interesting to make yourself be noticed. Also, DO YOUR RESEARCH before you even step up to bat.
My girlfriend works at another large finance firm in NYC and at their last interview, she was a greeter. You’d be surprised how many people were rejected just because they were 1) rude to her b/c they thought she was a nobody, 2) tried to flirt with her, or 3) couldn’t maintain a normal conversation with her.
Anyways, good luck seniors…
Thanks Anon!
Your comment “…the interview process does not start at the scheduled interview time” is so true. It also would have been a great quote for the article!
I’d like to hear more from you in the future. Feel free to comment/add to/ridicule any of my posts as you see fit!

I am always impressed with candidates who ask questions in an interview. E.g. What are the major challenges for someone in this position in your company? An interview is a two-way street. It is an opportunity for the candidate to find out if they want to work in the company. So, ask lots of pertinent questions!
