The Cost of Going Out

Take a look at my current assets and glance at my Spending Account.

Balance: $.86 (That’s 86 CENTS)

So it looks like I will be living very frugally this weekend! I will stay away from 4th Street (Where I have been very often recently because of the Alamo Apprentice) and I will not spend on any frivolous expenses. I need to be careful of making it to Downtown this weekend:

The Downtown area of Austin has a few primary attractions:

  • 6th Street - Cheap drinks, lots of live music and tons of college students. Austin is the Live Music Capitol of the US. On weekdays regular drinks are generally in the $1 range, very cheap. Weekends the price goes up to at least $2.00 specials and an average of $3.50-$6.00 for anything else. 6th Street is blocked off at nights due to the mass amount of people that walk through (It’s like a mini Bourbon Street). Lots of small food vendors on 6th also. I DO NOT leave 6th without getting pizza first (and maybe a Bratwurst). It’s a strict rule.
  • 5th Street - A mixture of clubs, restaurants and nicer bars. Priced between 4th and 6th Streets, but leans more towards 4th Street prices.
  • 4th Street - Mainly the more affluent, 25+ crowd. The bars and clubs here are swankier and appropriate dress is required. Expect to pay $6.50 – $12.00 for a relatively common drink (Mohito, Martini etc). There are lots of very nice restaurants in this area. My record is a $150 bill for 2 people at a Hawaain Fusion restaurant. I tend to have a drooling problem on 4th because of the amazing cars.

Going Downtown with friends generally ends up being pretty expensive, especially when you pay for other people also…but it’s also terribly fun!

Luckily I am good about not exceeding my spending account (I still have $20 in cash for the weekend), but I must spend it wisely. I also need to keep at least a $50 cushion of money in the Spending Account.

I wish I was a non-drinking, anorexic vegetarian. Life would be so much cheaper :-)

Austin was actually rated the #1 city to live for singles!

All types of people live here, creating a very diverse city full of culture, activities and lots of fun.

Hey Nev, we like to hit up Fuel early on in the night because of the cheap drink prices. It’s usually $1-$2 for wells (even on Fri & Sat nights!) and the bartenders a great at making them nice and strong. We usually stay there until around 11PM or so then move on to more expenive places.

    Have a good weekend!

Dude, being a vegetarian is way more expensive than eating meat. Try to cook a filling meal with only vegetibles and you will see what i am talking about.

Didn’t know you were an Austinite!

I love your comment, primarily because I am a huge carnivore. I don’t think I could EVER become a vegetarian.

I formally retract my vegetarian statement. Now, I only wish I was a non-drinking anorexic :-)

You speak the truth when you say going out takes a toll on the finances…I can easily drop $100 – $200 per night if I’m not paying attention: drinks, cover, cabs, food, etc. Granted Chicago is a bit more expensive than Austin, but it adds up just the same.

Why is having fun so expensive?

Having fun is expensive because it is so much damn fun.

Especially once you get strippers involved…

You should find a hotel with a free happy hour and go to town! Or just dress up and have a sugar mama buy you a drink or ten.

I want to know how you have time for school, all this fun, a blog to be reckoned with….posting on my blog

and everything else you do? I am keeping you on my radar as I barely had enough time to make a few bucks and be misquoted in a recent interview regarding the Wendys finger in the chili drama.

I try to stay off my ass. I get REALLY REALLY tired of “sitting around”…I try to take after my mom who is productive at every waking moment. If I was HALF as productive as her I’d be a rival to Bill Gates.

But Joshua, it seems I’m not the one who has a lot of stuff going on. From talking to you, it seems like you’ve got a plate overflowing with activity!

I did a “Joshua Estrin Wendy’s” Google search and found the misquoting article. I got a laugh out of the name, “Menu for Recovery” HA!

At least they got your name right!

Here’ a little money-saving tip I use when I’m out drinking with friends:

Try to be in the bathroom when the bill comes. It takes a little practice to get the timing down, but eventually you’ll find it to be a valueable cost-saving strategy.
