Signed Up For Guitar lessons

September 20, 2006 by Neville

Since 8th grade I’ve played the guitar, but I’ve never LEARNED the guitar. After a few months of basic lessons I could pick up songs from guitar tabs on the internet, but all the theory behind it was skipped over.

Same thing with piano, I can PLAY a little…but I really can’t read music all that well, or understand the theory behind it.

In my haste to just play something, I’ve effectively skipped over all the theory, and for this reason I have never progressed much beyond my skill level from the 8th grade. This bugs me because I really enjoy playing music.

Obviously I need some formal help in this area, so I’ve finally started taking guitar lessons again, but this time with a heavy emphasis on music theory, re-learning to read music and the mathematical functioning behind the guitar and piano.

Now that I’ve been playing for years, the theory behind it makes SO MUCH MORE sense than when I was a beginner. It’s def. one of those “I told you so” kind of things.

The cost of professional lessons at the Austin School of Music (I didn’t want to go with an independent teacher off CraigsList) is $105/month, which includes four, thirty minute lessons a month.

This time around, I am going to properly document what I’ve learned in each lesson. Once part of that is recording what I physically learned to play. I decided to do this in video form:

I feel this will be one of the better investments I have ever made. More of a personal investment though.

—————-

These music lessons somehow relate to the ONLY plan for the future I have:

Where ever I end up living, I want to have a music room. Meaning I want one large room with a bunch of instruments in it: basic everyday instruments as well as a collection of weird instruments from around the world.

Three Best Places for an Aspiring Entrepreneur

September 15, 2006 by Neville

Come 2007 I can technically move anywhere, as I have no physical ties to Austin, TX.

I had no plans to move, but I wanted to see what my potential city candidates were before I completely knocked the idea.

Asking some mentors, I was advised that any city I lived in would be most beneficial to me if it has the following things:

-Strong educational resources in the university environment.
-Strong relationship between science and business.
-A strong and established business incubator.
-High tech companies all around.

There are areas in the United States that fit these criteria:
-Silicon Valley in California (San Francisco & surrounding area)
-Route 128 in Massachusetts (Boston, MA.)
-Austin, TX.

There is simply more opportunity in these three places for a startup company than anywhere else in the United States.

Internet Retailing & Photography

September 6, 2006 by Neville

Go to an internet store, any store, and it’s mostly the same thing. Click through products at different stores and with a few subtle differences, it’s mainly the same thing. It’s getting very difficult to differentiate one’s self with an online store.

I’m working on another ecommerce store and instead of being the designer/creator of the store, I’m officially becoming the photographer. I’m taking my own product photos to differentiate the store from the distributors website, but mainly to give the site personality. I have already begun the process of ordering all the products (About 20 at a time) and taking pictures/video of them.

Sometimes the promotional photos provided by the manufacturer is good enough to explain the product, so I won’t take photos of EVERYTHING….however I want a good majority of the site to have the photos taken.

FOR EXAMPLE:

In the pranks section of the site, there is a novelty fake cigar. Here is the provided photo for the fake cigar:

Now here is an “action shot” picture I took with the fake cigar:

Goofy! But explains the product much better. Notice the lack of photo editing. I’ve been purposely making these photos very amateur-ish. I’ve been taking 3 added photos of each product which will make it amusing for customers to browse the site, and give them a better sense of the product they’re buying.

I am hoping to build a popular feature much like ThinkGeek.com’s “Customer Action Shots” feature.

One problem is I’ve been finding it difficult to take unique pictures without the assitance of someone else, so I bought this awesome GorillaPod which is a tripod with bendable legs:

Since I usually take these pictures in spare time, I can’t always have someone around. However I can clamp this GorillaPod thing to the side of a door, fan, guitar…you name it and get a great shot!

Myth Busted: Getting out of a speeding ticket

August 31, 2006 by Neville

I found out I couldn’t get out of a speeding ticket the way I hoped. Apparently the law concerning delaying a trial has changed in favor of the courts.

The plan was to keep delaying the court date until both officers involved in clocking and catching me didn’t show up. I asked several employees of the court, a lawyer and a judge how the process worked, and I got the same conclusion.

What makes it hard now is:

1.) You may ask for a continuance of the trial on a later date, but it’s at the discretion of the judge to grant it. I was told by the judge herself that she RARELY grants continuances on the same day unless for a VERY VERY good reason, which I most likely didn’t have.

2.) If the officer(s) provide an excuse for now showing up (basically they just have to say they’re on duty), the trial may still proceed even without them. This is probably better for society as a whole, because while I’m just trying to circumvent a ticket, I’m effectively taking a law enforcer off the street.

The court clerk told me they’ve basically shut down that particular loophole in the system.

So $160 later, I’m taking deferred adjudication. Now I must take defensive driving again and avoid a ticket for the next three months.

Speeding Ticket Experiment

August 25, 2006 by Neville

I’ve spent thousands upon thousands of dollars on speeding tickets, parking tickets, defensive driving, deferred adjudication etc. over the years…pretty much wasted money.

I’ve heard a million different people tell me about ways to weasel out of a ticket, and with the latest ticket I got this week, I’m going to give it a try.

I was caught doing 15 mph over the limit in a speed trap, meaning one officer clocked my speed, then another one pulled me over.

What I’ve heard over and over but without any FIRST PERSON EVIDENCE is that you contest the ticket, and if the officers don’t show, the ticket is dismissed. I’ve heard this is typically what lawyers do to get tickets dismissed…if the officer shows up for the hearing, they reschedule up to three times until the officer is unavailable on one of the three occasions. I figure

I could give this a try instead of immediately having to pay $300+ for the deferred adjudication process. If I’m not completely mistaken, this is the way I think the Texas traffic system works:

I’ll test my luck with this because there were TWO officers involved….meaning if both don’t show up, the ticket gets dismissed……I think.

I’ve already taken defensive driving once this year, so my only option is doing deferred adjudication which means not getting a ticket for 6-12 months….or else you pay for BOTH tickets. You still have to pay a fee for the “privilege” of going on D.A. and another fee when you complete it.

One of my concerns is knowing how the officers have shown up. Do I wait in the courtroom, wait till I see them both, then just leave? The court isn’t far from me, so I might go do a little recon work first and sit in on some trials, maybe speak to a few lawyers about their methods.

I want to find out once and for all if this is actually a viable (although time consuming) method of getting a ticket dismissed!

Change Email Address

August 24, 2006 by Neville

It’s about time I change my old school email address. Nev@mail.utexas.edu just doesn’t look all that professional….although sometimes it’s good to email someone with a school email address…(Like on Craigslist).

Currently I am starting to use NevMed@gmail.com

However, an email such as nev@enwon.com would create more exposure because people will often type in www.enwon.com when they see the email.

I was also thinking of nev@neville1.com…Ideally I’d like nev@nev.com or something along those lines, but Nev.com and Neville.com have been taken and not-selling for years!

Now I have to change all my email addresses from all sorts of places before it expires!

I’ll also eventually have to change this business card. I don’t really care for cool business cards, I prefer the free ones from VistaPrint!

Making up for being absent

August 21, 2006 by Neville

It’s been a full month since the last entry, and I feel like I should have tracked it better. I kind of wish this blog was private so I could actually write everything that goes on, but it’s still nice to share.

Anyhow, I was in California for 2 1/2 weeks for business/fun, and the trip was very successful. I spent a total of $2,100 which was slightly over budget, and rings in an average of $123/day. I still feel that’s a lot, because I didn’t pay a cent the entire trip for housing (Thanks to awesome friends).

During the trip I spent over $600 on rental cars. I had to make sure I got full insurance coverage on all the cars since I recently got in a wreck, plus I’m under 25, generally meaning an extra $25 per day….plus you have to fill up your own gas.

My rental car for 21 days after the wreck was taken care of by the insurance company, but I had to pay $315 for the extra insurance ($15/day). I made sure to take this, because if I wrecked the rental WITHOUT insurance, I’d be doubly screwed.

Soon as I got back to Austin, I realized my lease on my summer apartment had expired! I got back to Austin at 1:00am on a Sunday night, and the apartment management had threatened to move my stuff out of the apartment by THAT NIGHT. Obviously I haggled here and there and eventually got them to slightly extend my stay for free, but I needed an apartment FAST.

Craigslist came to the rescue. I now have a larger room in a nearby apartment for only $270/month…and I paid out the entire lease up front, so all the way until December I don’t have to pay a monthly rent. Total was $945 till December 1st, 2006.

Unfortunately I had to move IMMEDIATELY when I got back to Austin, but the Camry was gone, so fortunately my parents gave me their spare van to use for the move. Also with a temporary car to use, I don’t have to go car shopping immediately. Plus I also have my scooter and bicycle to use….and legs….and the buses.

The van actually came in handy because I needed to move quick in one trip, I don’t think the Camry would have fit all my stuff (even though I have very little). It’s not the most fun thing to drive, but it does get me around having to buy a new car immediately! Here’s my new pickup line:

Free Advertising / California Trip

July 19, 2006 by Neville

The FacebookProfile site started about a month ago is getting a good amount of traffic, and now also has a PageRank of 4.

I personally HATE advertising-based business models, but I don’t see any other income options for this site. Currently still making between $0 and $3 per day….ehh.

A funny way for advertising any site for free is with chalkboard graffiti in campus classrooms. FacebookProfile won’t benefit TOO much from this form of advertising, but it’s a great way to promote local ventures, parties, upcoming events etc!

And just for kicks I took these pictures until some very confused janitors walked in :-)

I will be in California next week, so if anyone with an interesting story wants to meet up, you know where to reach me.

July 24th (Monday) – July 27th (Thursday) = Los Angeles

July 27th (Thursday) – August 3rd (Thursday) = San Francisco Bay Area

August 3rd (Thursday – August 7th (Monday) = Las Vegas for Defcon Hacker Convention.

I M P O R T A N T :
I’m making an open request for anyone to let me know of any big events going down while I’m there. It’d be fun to crash a couple of high profile parties, make some contacts and have fun.

The whole purpose of this trip is to make new contacts, so if you’ve got any leads, let me know!

Dedicated Days – YouTube Videos

July 11, 2006 by Neville

Oye….staying focused on a task is hard when there are lots of different things going on.

Something I’ve really slacked on is getting all my House Of Rave videos on YouTube, like this section of the videos. This way viewers can watch the videos directly on the website, and it also garners free advertising from YouTube.

This transition requires the following for EACH video:

  1. Uploading the video to YouTube. (approx 1-2 minutes)
  2. Writing a new description. (approx 2 minutes)
  3. Taking a new screenshot from the YouTube video and Photoshopping to correct size. (approx 2-3 minutes)
  4. Uploading new screenshot and video (approx 1 minute)
  5. formatting the More Info page with pertinent video information (approx 3-4 minutes)

It’s probably the most mundane thing I’ve ever done. In the end it will pay off, but damn it’s not fun right now! I’ll have to find a way to streamline all this work.

So today ALL I WILL DO TODAY is overhaul the HoR video section. I have taken care of most of my daily work, and undoubtedly more will pop up throughout the day, but my ONE MAIN TASK IS UPLOADING THE ENTIRE VIDEO SECTION.

It’s 11:50am on Tuesday right now…..

If it’s not done by 11:59pm tonight, I’ve been slacking!!

Car Accident – Car Totaled

July 10, 2006 by Neville

Last week I TOTALED MY CAR. Correction, an uninsured guy ran a red light as if it didn’t exist and totaled my car.

I planned on having my flawless 2004 Toyota Camry for a very long time, but thanks to “Mr. Crossed Six Lanes of Busy Traffic on a Red Light” that’s not happening.

It was a pretty bad wreck (The pictures don’t capture the damage very well), but I fortunately walked out of it without a scratch. It’s not yet 100% sure what’s going to happen with the insurance, all I know is I’m going to be over $8,000 poorer after it’s all done.

I’ve been in two wrecks where a car was totaled, both not my fault, and both times the other person DIDN’T HAVE INSURANCE.

Suppose this wreck was my fault, my insurance would taken care the other guys expenses….but when the tables are turned and it’s HIS fault, I get nothing? Doesn’t sound fair at all, and therefore I’m pressing charges against this guy. All he gets is a minor ticket for driving without insurance?? NO WONDER so many people don’t get insurance, there’s really no urgent need for it.

Here I display my Flash design skills and have recreated a crude version of the accident:

The second I saw him cross into my lane (I had a green light and was going the speed limit) I swerved & braked, but it was too late. He almost hit a bunch of other people going through the light also, and more than 4 people turned their cars around to yell at the guy….two of them stayed to testify for me.

The thing is, I can’t really afford to pull more than $8,000 (Possibly more than $10,000) from nowhere. I also refuse to take a loan for a new car. I will buy a car for cash, even if I have to drive a low-end Kia. In an extremely regrettable decision, I might have to sell off a lot of my stock to pay for this….or start making a lot more money, really fast (I like the latter option)!

I’m grateful this is a financial impact rather than a health impact. I remember seeing the door handle of the truck slamming into my car not even two inches from my face…so this situation could have been MUCH worse.

—————-

Now I need to do the (im)possible and find a NEW Toyota Camry for under $10,000. That car holds it’s value so well that it’s very difficult.
